Biography

“It started in 1979, when I had my first load of mulch dumped in my parents’ driveway.

My mom and dad looked at it and said, ‘You might need a little more room’”, Grandma’s founder, Doug Rhinehart, remembers fondly. A short time later, his parents, Pat and Jim, helped finance the purchase of a small Victorian farmhouse, where Doug and his wife, Paulette, lived. They called it Grandma’s Gardens to honor the traditions of family gardening, hand-me-down plants, and all the memories of flowers that began in their own grandmas’ gardens.

Notes

Visit Grandma’s today and that small farmhouse remains, now home to the Gift Shop. While the garden center itself has expanded from its original 4 acres to 14 acres of paved paths, beautiful display gardens, 10 buildings, a goat pen and fishing pond, Grandma’s is still the same family business it’s been from the beginning. Find Grandma Pat or Grandpa Jim (still the garden center’s biggest fans) on a busy day in the Spring, and they’ll reminisce about days when protecting the annuals from cold Spring nights meant bringing all 5 flats of them into the house. From its meager start on a quiet stretch of Route 48 between Dayton and Cincinnati, the business and the suburbs around it have grown by leaps and bounds.
